A few pictures from Covent Garden and the Strand

Covent Garden Entrance. The market is a long block square with entrances on three sides. Originally planned for homes of the wealthy with a Piazza in the middle. Current description not far off. The 0.16 miles between Covent Garden and Leicester Station is the most expensive property in the world.

Somerset House - in 1549 the Duke of Somerset "pulled down and made level" a number of churches in the area and used the materials to build his palace. He made a few enemies and eventually lost his head. It is a public building now with the wonderful Courtauld Gallery and a water feature in the centre. Happy screams of children filled the courtyard.
Charles Dickens' offices of his weekly magazine were on the second story here He writes that he often looked out the windows to see rain, people milling around, and cabs like dark hearses. Still people, still dark cabs, no rain today.
All gone now but literary giants Samuel Pepys, John Dryden, Alexander Pope, Jonathan Swift and Samuel Johnson all frequented Will's pub in this neighbourhood close to Covent Garden. Wisdom and humour fills the air.
And the phones  work!
Jane Austen lived around the corner when in London and reported, "All dirt and confusion but in an interesting way."
